Sex Offender Support and Education Network, also known as SOSEN or S.O.S.E.N. would like for the public to believe that registered sex offenders are really just innocent people who ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time. They'd like for the public to believe that anyone can end up on the sex offender registry, and that most of the people on the sex offender registry are either falsely accused, convicted of "Romeo/Juliet" crimes, or convicted of urinating in alleyways. They would also like the public to think that these sex offenders on the registry are reformed, have paid their time, and are no longer a threat to our children. Therefore, SOSEN believes that the sex offender registry should just go away. After all, it's not necessary, because most of them are innocent, or have been accused of very minor crimes.

However, if one takes a quick look at the list of their members, their claims about sex offenders being innocent, falsely accused, or convicted of very minor crimes comes apart quickly at the seams.

This organization, like many other RSO activist organizations, blames the victim at every turn.

They also, like many other RSO activist organizations, rally to change legislation that affects them, and harasses other groups on the internet, such as anti-pedophile activists, victims of sex abuse, and actual support groups for the family members of sex offenders who are trying to get real help for their families, rather than find someone else to blame.

Many of the members of this organization are also members of other RSO activist organizations. Many of these organizations ally with each other to organize events and to perform acts of "civil disobedience." In fact, one of the RSO activist organizations which is allied with SOSEN has created a Pedophile Manifesto, advocating the creation and detonation of a bomb to make their point. Shirley Lowery's management was overthrown in late 2007 by Evil-unveiled.com/Linda Pehrson with the assistance of Evil-unveiled.com/Cheryl Griffiths. They worked tirelessly to maintain the same level of enabling and victim blaming behavior as the previous administration. Cheryl has since left SOSEN and been replaced by Evil-unveiled.com/Jackie Sparling. Despite her previous welfare fraud conviction, Linda Pehrson remains, hoping to one day soon be able to pay herself a salary from grants or donations made to SOSEN.

To further their agenda SOSEN's current administration has joined forces with Evil-unveiled.com/TMaximus95 and his "National Coalition for Social and Political Reform", which seeks to abolish virtually all sex offender laws and whose "Unified Position Statement" includes the joint belief that there should be no age of consent law in America:

Presumably as we work to develop goals, our position on the registry will be included somewhere. It's also pretty critical information to have at least Staff consensus on as we try to work with the public, media, and legislators.

The reason that I bring this up is that flowergirl pretty consistently gets pissed off when people talk about the registry. I know there are others as well. If this is not the SOSEN position, we should say that - "everybody has a right to their opinion, but the SOSEN position is ..."

Is "returning the registry to its original intent" our stated goal while our secret goal is the abolition of the registry?

That's my personal opinion, but it shouldn't be the official SOSEN position. The surest way to stop the public from listening to us is if we are known as an organization that exists to get rid of the registry. The public loves their little registry, and won't care what we have to say if they think we're just trying to do away with it. Even if it turns out that we ALL feel like the registry should go, our public stance should be to put it back to its original purpose, and nothing more. It's likely that that's the best we can hope for anyway, and it won't help our cause to seem too "radical" even if we are.

I think we can all HOPE for the day when the registry is found to be unconstitutional but it is dangerous to publicly argue for that. We need to side with the groups of child advocates (the REAL ones) who say that the registry is over-inclusive and people are on it for too long.

the piece about money being provided to an individual. We just gave a bunch of money to Linda - was that a bad thing?
we are accepting donations for the Oklahoma Rally (and also did so for the Ohio Rally). Those were both clearly marketed IN PUBLIC as an effort to change laws - a no-no I think for a 501c3.

Well one thing is for sure.....We have not signed all the paperwork yet.....the last of it is in the mail to me right now. I will hold it until we get this cleared up. If we have to be something other than a 501c3, then by all means, let's do what we have to do. The money we are getting from donations is not that much and if we have to pay taxes, then so be it.

The IMPORTANT matter here is that we ARE ABLE to fight politically. THis is what our forum is about!!! Let's get the paperwork right and then...................SHOVE IT RIGHT BACK UP THEIR A$$!!!!

If I remember right, always a challenge and even more so now, we did the c3 instead of the c4 for reasons of simplicity. I remember Mori telling us that the c3 application process is easier and quicker. Also, it is much easier for a c3 to get c4 approval at a later date. The plan was to file at least once with the IRS as a c3, then look at moving toward a c4 designation.

As for political activity, so long as we do not directly lobby for legislation as an organization, we are safe. Individual and groups of members can do so. They can even identify themselves as members of SOSEN. The key is to always stress the Support and Education part of the name as the true thrust of the organization itself. It is all just sematics.

Ok- not to be difficult here, but what I read says that we can't attempt to influence legislation. That's pretty self-explanatory... And it's really what we are all about. Anyone reading either the website or the forum would have the distinct impression that we are definitely trying to influence legislation- because we are...

So, if there is another designation which would make it easier to do so, and not be "splitting hairs" with the law- we need to change to that designation ASAP. Otherwise, we are just giving our enemies another way to kill our efforts, as exemplified by the letter above. This is a substantial chink in our armor, IMO, and we need to get it fixed soon. We can say all day long that SOSEN is just an educational organization, but the truth is we ARE attempting to influence legislation. (I know that the law was written that way to deter lobbying organizations from gaining tax-exempt status under 501(c3) or whatever, but in a way that is exactly what we are trying to become. So, let's fix this before someone comes along and pulls the rug out from under us. Just my opinion... but the right opinion, nonetheless.

Freeman had unlimited access to the architecture of our forum, as the Exec. While I know most of the former offenders who are working hard for reform do not have ill intent, what I have learned is that it really is nearly impossible to know which former offenders are going back into a life of crime and which ones won't. The arrested individual had apparently been living a double life for a long time, and none of us had even an inkling.

We also don't know if he was using the behind the scenes of the forum for nefarious purposes. The potential for that likely problem to continue in some form or other had to be shut off as well. There were hundreds of user names whose accounts had not been activated, and it certainly appears that Freeman may have been having people sign up for SOhopeful just so that he would have an email address for him. We have no way of knowing for sure - he was supposed to activate accounts and put people into user groups.

I think the most painful part of all of this is that the AZ/PJ people were right about one thing - active offenders were/are insinuating themselves into groups where sincere people do have child safety at their core message, and using us for cover. I don't think any of the groups are immune, and I don't know what anyone would do about that. None of the groups have real good screening processes (criminal background checks and the like) for leadership positions. (Freeman apparently had a far more extensive criminal history than just his one sex conviction - much of it violent in nature.) The one thing I know I won't ever do again is be in a leadership position of any organization where a registrant is at the top of the food chain, as unfortunate as that is as it regards registrants who really are working at living rightly and legally.

This is a tactic that has been used by SOclear before and we put a quick stop to it. Before they said that if you want to be a REAL activist, SOclear has positions open. THAT FRIED MY BACON! and a stop was immediately put to that. They are being more careful now. We do want a spirit of cooperation with the other groups. We really do need each other. Fighting among the various groups is detrimental to our cause. That said, there ARE limits and this is fast reaching the limit. Now, I know you have reservations about cooperation between the groups. I am not suggesting we have to hold hands and sing Kumbaya on the White House Lawn. I am not suggesting we support any hair brained scheme that comes up. But there is a level of cooperation that we need to be more effective.

If he couldn't head up a committee to make that OK symposium happen, what makes anyone think he can head up anything else? Rod doesn't seem to get that "heading up" something means more than having your name out there in lights. In the instance of committees and groups working on sex offender issues, the leaders work just as hard as the rest of the group.

If allowed to continue, this man is going to end up being a public embarrassment to SOSEN. I wouldn't recommend him to head up ANYTHING in SOSEN, let alone in this coalition.

I emailed him and basically told him that he was behaving like a loose cannon and compared him to tsand and zman. I told him he had to follow the rules like everyone and that the "punishment" was relatively light. Am I the only one who sees what's going on in our forum? It was bad enough with Vanguard and F1 constantly insinuating that SOClear is where it's at- Now I guess Tmax and Lets are in the mix. Personally, I'd be more than happy if they would all go over to SOClear with their claptrap. If we are so ineffective, why do they come here to promote themselves and their latest stupidity?

We'd better figure out what we're going to do with the SOClear radicals (this includes Lets)- I'm finding it more and more difficult to not use the old "flame thrower". And once the flaming starts, it ain't gonna be easy to douse the fire.

Well, everyone does that. But what's with all the SOClear people? This has been a quiet little problem for a while now. Lets is just aligning with them to further his own cause. But we've lately had a lot of SOClear promotion on the forum. And it's usually coupled with criticism of Sosen. Ya gotta wonder- if we're so ineffective and useless, why are they coming here instead of going to the marvelously effective SOClear? Tmax said he wants nothing to do with our brand of activism- so why's he here? And isn't it a bit odd how all of this smacks of coordination amongst these people? It would be an interesting exercise to look at who has been PMing more than normal (and with whom).

No. uh-uh. Tmax shouldn't be offered anything remotely like a leadership position- especially in our Therapy area.

I find it hard to believe that anyone here is unaware of what a few of our members are up to. Tmax's posts, in particular, are divisive. This has nothing to do with the current controversy around here. I posted about this a while back in a thread titled "SOClear". Thus far, there has been no action taken. We can sit and watch them some more- but I think we'll be watching as they put the nail in the coffin of Sosen if we don't start taking this seriously NOW. How much more "watching" do these people need before we decide to actually moderate the damn forum?

There is much more going on in the background than we are admitting. There was a bit of a vacuum left when SoHopeful collapsed. We are the best ones to fill that vacuum. Unfortunately, SOClear is determined to do the same. The difference is that we aren't sending our members over to SOClear to troll around for new recruits. They are doing this to us. And they are regularly downing Sosen in the process- and posting stuff which will be used against us. And Lets is right there with them, doing the same. Either we quickly come to terms with this, or I will.
